The mission of the Women’s Museum of California is to educate and inspire present and future generations about the experiences and contributions of diverse women by collecting, preserving, and interpreting their stories.
Since 1997 the Women’s Museum of California evolved into a full-fledged women’s history museum and valuable community educational resource. With the help of many volunteers and a dedicated staff, the WMC features a variety of changing exhibits and displays on women’s history, sponsors workshop and lecture series, develops and implements educational and cultural events, including art shows, live performances and presentations; maintains a library, archive & collections; and provides speakers for the community through its Speakers’ Bureau. The WMC is a co-founder and sponsor of the San Diego County Women’s Hall of Fame. The museum collaborates with dozens of women’s and girl’s organizations and agencies throughout San Diego.

Crafting Feminism:
Textiles of the Women’s Movement
From the suffrage sashes and banners of the early 1900s to the pink knitted pussy hats of the modern Women’s March movement, textiles have played an important role as a messenger for women’s activism.
Textiles connect women throughout time. They are skills passed down from generation to generation, from mother to daughter, within the privacy of the home.
The items displayed in this exhibit are evidence of women’s historical impact on our society. By celebrating craftwork as a tool of artistic and political expression, and not only as private acts of women’s labor, we see how impactful women have been in our society.
