October is a great month for kids and families to explore a new museum in San Diego or visit their favorite arts and culture destination. Thanks to the San Diego Museum Council’s Kids Free in October, kids 12 and under receive free admission at 40 museums all month long. Families will not want to miss some of the fun and educational exhibitions on view such as The Art of the Brick LEGO exhibit at the Ruben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park or The Wonder Sound at the New Children’s Museum. Below you will find a list of my top ten favorite kid-centric museums and what they have on view this month. Being a museum member has many exciting benefits. Not only are you able to bring your family to a fun and educational venue, now you can use your membership to get into other museums for free during The Big Exchange, May 1-18, 2016. There are 33 San Diego Museums participating in this promotion including major museums such as the USS Midway Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, and Mingei International Museum thanks to the San Diego Museum Council. All you have to do is show that you are a member of one of the participating museums and you get free admission to all 33 museums.

Boasting two excellent interactive play areas it is an adventurous place for families who want to explore different environments and learn about nature, water, music and more. Blockbuster exhibitions recently opened at The San Diego Museum of Art and San Diego History Center (SDHC) in Balboa Park that provides the perfect balance of engaging art and interactive experiences perfect for the whole family. You are not going to want to miss Gauguin to Warhol: 20th Century Icons from the Albright-Knox Art Gallery at The San Diego Museum of Art, an exhibition that tells the story of Modern art through a survey of important works, and Ingenious! The World of Dr. Seuss at SDHC, an exhibit that features original works by San Diego native Dr. Seuss in a whimsical installation that kids will love. Gauguin to Warhol will be on view through January 27, 2015 and Ingenious! The World of Dr. Seuss will be on view through December 31, 2015.

San Diego is rich in arts and culture. I was lucky to grow up in America's Finest City, and experience many museums across the County. Once I started a family of my own I knew I wanted to instill the same love of museums with my kids, and began visiting many with them. I wasn't the least surprised to find they love them as much as I do!

There are SO many family-friendly museums and cultural establishments in town. From the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, to Birch Aquarium at Scripps, to San Diego Botanic Garden, there's sure to be a destination that fits your family's interests.
